Geography & Geology of Switzerland: Roots of its Touristic Appeal
With an approximate total area of 41285km sq. Switzerland is a landlocked country between: France, Germany, Italy & Austria. With elevation ranging from less than 200m to over 4500m above sea level, Switzerland’s climate is predominantly Temperate. In the summer time, Switzerland can experience heatwaves with temperatures in the 30’C. And in the winter, cold waves bring temperatures down below 0’C. MeteoSwiss, Accessed June 8, 2025
The geology of Switzerland is comprised of basement Crystalline Igneous Rocks (Granites), which are overlain predominantly with metamorphic-softer metasedimentary-sedimentary rocks (limestone, marl, flysch, conglomerate, siltstone…). This sequential geology gives insight into it’s continental subduction birth (potential collision between African and Eurasian Plates), relative to the sea-floor magmatism birth of countries within the Caribbean plate, such as Jamaica. The occurrence of sedimentary rocks indicate periods of time, whereby parts, or all of Switzerland, was submerged in sea or lake water. And Areas of relatively low level, indicate earthquake forces potentially resulted in basin formations. It’s through the combination of geographic & geologic forces, that Switzerland has it’s picturesque landscape, we see today.

Challenges to Switzerland Tourism Sustainability
According to an EHL Hospitality Website Publication accessed on June 8 2025, Switzerland as a tourist destination declined from 5th in 1950, to 28th in 2022. “From the 1970s to the 1990s, the development of airlines and transportation facilitated access to Switzerland, especially for mountain tourism. However, the 2000s brought challenges such as competition from new destinations offering more competitive prices…The strong Swiss franc reduced the purchasing power of foreign visitors… Increased competition from countries like Austria, Spain, France and Italy, offered cheaper yet similar services, posed challenges.” Similarly, this publication went on to highlight that climate change. as well as slow digital innovation, were contributing factors to the decline in Switzerland’s attractiveness for skiing tourism.
