Nepal Flood | 1000 Year Event? Our New Norm
These scenes are horrific.
These are things you would think are only in movies. And what is even more frightening, is the reported (CNN, Willsey Geologist-YouTube) nature of this terrifying disaster:
Avalance-Avalanche Triggered Earthquake -River Dam Breach-Flood-Debris Flow.
What?!
This is a disaster that is so highly uncommon, there still isn’t a 100% sureity (at the time of this post drafting), as to what actually triggered this disaster, and how to classify this disaster.This for me is what makes this disaster truly frightening; because within the context of disaster planning for a future event such as this, your capacity to do so is strengthened when you know what the triggers are, and/or likely to be.
Now then, within the context of 100 yr-1000 yr flood events, this is a highlight that our development plans as a country, and global society, is truly under threat. The scene of the bridge washing away in this video, is sobering to say the least.
The landscape of the region in the video indicates that the bridge was constructed with the reality of a big river & flood capacity in mind. As the video highlights, the flood took it out in about its 2nd-3rd wave. That’s serious.
So just as how this event is pressuring the brain of Geoscientists, I know this event is causing same amongst Engineers, globally.
